SOMERSET CALL FOR SEVENTEENS

Wilson twins and Wring get county recognition

Somerset Under 17s
Somerset Under 17s

A trio of the rejuvenated U17s squad have been called up for Somerset for the 22/23 county campaign. Chris and Andrew Wilson as well as Nat Wring faced Cornwall in Launceston last weekend and will continue to feature as the campaign coninues.

This is great reward for the U17s coaches and players in what has been a tough season, struggling for numbers until merging with the U16s this squad has gone strength to strength with several players already on the senior coaches radar for when they turn 18.

The Wilson boys are the youngest of the 4 brothers who have played for Clevedon. Both boys have been through the Bristol Bears Excel squad. They have committed to Clevedon for 12/13 years and in the past 2 years that Andrew has taken the captaincy. Over the years have become a strong front row.

Nat Wring like the Wilson boys join at the age of 5 has is one of the smallest players but also one of the strongest and has given 100% to the club. Nat played his part in the Bristol Bears academy.

"Quarter Final Woe.."

Clevedon were soundly beaten by an energetic and committed Barton Hill side, who kept the scoreboard ticking over rapidly.

A 31-0 half time lead was formidable. However, Clevedon, although shell-shocked, had the better of the second half down the hill.

Three unanswered tries saw Barts staring at only 31-21 lead with 20 minutes to go and Clevedon looking good. Unfortunately, Clevedon couldn't score again, no matter how they tried.

Barts sealed it with a converted try, two minutes from the final whistle.

Good luck to them on Saturday as they face Longlevens in the semi final.

"Game on after groundstaff perform miracles"

Clevedon secured a quarter final place after defeating Dorchester in a match that was well contested.

Dorchester's large pack took the lead within 3 minutes, with a converted try.

Clevedon hit back soon after, to level the score, with a try from Jack Davey, which was converted by Ethan Thomas.

Following the scoring on social media is frustrating as the messages are a bit behind the action, but it seems that Clevedon were never behind again in the match.

Clevedon withstood the final flourish from Dorchester and now look forward to next week, away against Barton Hill for 14:30 kickoff.

Clevedon will travel to league rivals Barton hill in the Quarter finals of the Papa johns South Plate. These sides have shared the spoils this season with Barts claiming a bonus point 30-32 win at The Vale in September ,before the boys in Blue and Gold triumphed 7-18 in the return fixture at Duncombe lane in February.

We would welcome any travelling support as our boys attempt to reach the semi finals.

A soggy end...

Soggy, soggy, soggy...
Soggy, soggy, soggy...

Soggy, soggy, soggy..."

Clevedon travelled to Chipping Sodbury, on Tuesday evening, for their last league game of the season.

This match had been postponed twice since the 20th January and finally it was on. It nearly wasn't though as a torrential downpour nearly scuppered it, despite the forking efforts of the Chipping Sodbury groundstaff.

The downpour abated and the game started early to maximise the drier spell of weather.

Splish, splash, splosh and the game was done, with Clevedon victorious in the very wet conditions.

Players, spectators and the ref were glad it was all over and ran off to find some warmth and a pint.

Clevedon finish the league season in sixth place and now look forward to their cup match next week, against Dorchester.

Pirates & Stothert concede games , Saxons stay up!

There will be no rugby for our senior teams this Saturday, after both opposition sides have gifted Clevedon home walkovers. Pirates struggled to travel in the PAPA Johns plate and Stothert & Pitt couldn't raise a side against the in-form Saxons.

The 1st XV will now be in the draw for the last 16 of the National competition, whilst the 5 points for a walkover, combined with recent good results, should be enough to keep the Saxons in Somerset 3 North.

Clevedon Seniors will now take on their conterparts from the Cricket club, in a social skittles match, before "The Ceili House Band" provide entertainment in the evening.

The first team will play their last league match on Tuesday, the 11th April away to Chipping Sodbury. The kick off will be 19:30.

Gillie's Coming Home

By Anthony Dauncey

"Giltrow to return to the Vale next season"

Gillie's Coming Home
Gillie's Coming Home

Clevedon Rugby Club Dinner Dance and Presentation Night

We are delighted to announce that Alex Giltrow will re-join Clevedon RFC in a player coach capacity from the 23/24 Season.

Gillie first joined the seasiders in 2008 where he played a key role in the all-conquering U17s team coached by the late Tim Brooks and current CRFC DOR Tony Dauncey that won the Somerset and Combination cup as well as picking up the county 7s title, It was on their undefeated France tour he picked up the monicker “Le Grande rouge” after terrorising the “Rugby club Epernay” defence. Gillie then represented the colts before moving to Nailsea for a taste of senior rugby under county coach Mark Hawkes.

Dauncey convinced Giltrow to return to Clevedon in 2011 in the hope he could retire from playing and the flame haired prop was an instant hit, his strength and mobility seeing him employed throughout the pack, including scoring a hat-trick from the back row to keep Clevedon in the league.

Recent years have seen Giltrow terrorising the front rows of National Division 2 where he has been a regular for Clifton RFC, his form in the lavender and black saw him gain International recognition for England Students as well as putting him on Pat Lams radar and in 2017 this saw Giltrow rewarded with a Bristol contract, debuting in the 50-5 win at Richmond as the Bears achieved promotion with 2 games to spare. The following season saw Gillie return to Clifton who benefitted from his growing stature and in 2022 Giltrow was named in the 2022 ND2 team of the year.

During his time away from the vale Gillie has regularly popped back to the Vale to watch close friend Trolley play and has recently moved to Clevedon.

Director of rugby Dauncey says on the signing “ A couple of weeks ago we announced that Georgey was leaving and that we would be looking at the coaching structure, during that review we thought that our young squad would really benefit from bringing in a player coach, we spoke to a couple of people but once we realised that Gillie could be available it was a no brainer. "Bringing Gillie in isn’t just about his ability on the pitch, hes a great bloke who’s proven himself every where he has been, I have worked with him before and he was clearly excited about the opportunity to transition into coaching"

He continued "We know our place as a club, we have a great youth set up that keeps producing quality players, some of those have a brief stay in the senior set up before playing rugby at a higher level and earning a few quid. We cannot and don’t ever want to pay players, but the hope is that these guys will return to the club to invest experience into the next batch of young players. Currently we have Joe Williams, Pottsy, Jack Williams and Georgey, who have all played rugby away from Clevedon before coming back, but getting Gillie, who is still young in front row years, is a massive coup for the club."

Cheers, Daunce

Georgie Steps Down

16th March 2023
By Anthony Dauncey

"Head coach to step down at the end of the season"

Head coach Nick George...
Head coach Nick George...">

Popular head coach, Nick George, is to step down from his role as Clevedon RFC head coach following the completion of the 22/23 season, as he has secured a role with the Fire Service and the time demands of this role will not allow the commitment needed in the head coach role.

George came in alongside Dave Owen in the 20/21 season, which was decimated by COVID. In the last 18 months, he has overseen a major overhaul in the culture and identity of the senior set up, which has led to a marked improvement in results, with Clevedon going from bottom of the league after 7 matches of last season to being competitive in the top half this season. Along the way beating high flyers Longlevens at The Vale as well as running them close in Gloucester last weekend.

Director of Rugby, Tony Dauncey, said "Georgy will be massively missed, his enthusiasm and passion for the way the game should be played is contagious. He has a great relationship with the boys and has been a pleasure to work with. However, we knew this day might come, which is why we built a coaching team that Nick has lead brilliantly. This should enable us to maintain some continuity, moving into next season whomever takes over."

Speaking from Ponty Pandy training station, Georgy commented,"I would like to thank everyone who has supported me at the club over the last three years, in particular Dauncey whom I've spoken to more than my wife in the last 18 months!". I also want to thank the players, I've enjoyed seeing them grow as rugby players, but also as bloody good people.

I'm excited to see how the coaching team can develop on from this foundation stage next season. This is the start of an exciting time at Clevedon RFC, it's been great to see the volunteers that have jumped onboard and helped recreate the 'buzz' on a Saturday afternoon.

Lastly, thanks to Neil Tucker for putting his faith in me and thanks to Amber for putting up with me!

I've loved my time as Head Coach, I'll look forward to contributing again in the future.

Dauncey will now seek to build a coaching team to move into the 23/24 season. He said "It is massively important that we maintain and build on the momentum created this season. We have a fantastic group of young players, supported by a fantastic coaching team. We will look at what we need to add to the coaching team to move forward and will announce our new structure in May, allowing the new team time to plan for the season.".

"Double Double"

Weave: Ethan scores...
Weave: Ethan scores...

Clevedon firsts and seconds both won this Saturday to achieve a unique doube double. Having played the same opposition at the start of the season, some five months ago, Clevedon had a dream weekend.

The firsts had to play at the Swiss Valley Stadium for the third time this season as the snow melt and heavy rain reduce The Vale to a quagmire - even the dogs wouldn't venture onto the pitch!

The seconds travelled with only 14 players, but still triumphed after their trip over the Mendips. They got back to the club at half time of the England match and wished they'd got delayed on the way home.

It's just as well Clevedon did the double D, otherwise the whole clubhouse would've been suicidal. As it was, the game was on, people chatted and shrugged at the carnage on the big screen.

Both Clevedon teams won and that's all that matters.

"Longlevens get even"

Clevedon travelled to Longlevens with high hopes of doing the double. However, LL had other ideas and came out and scored two tries in the first ten minutes.

Clevedon hit back with two of their own from William Trollope that seemed to stun their opposition. With the score at 18-19 LL knew they were in a game. A late first half try for LL made the score 18-24 at the break.

In what was a good and exciting game, the home side flattered their scoring in the 81st minute after Clevedon had got within 4 points with twenty to go.

This was a really good and committed performance from Clevedon that will boost them ahead of their game against Midsomer Norton who sit one place above them in the league.

On Saturday, 11th March, the firsts are at home to Midsomer Norton for a 14:30 kick off, while the seconds are away to the same opposition.

"Back on track"

Clevedon returned to winning ways after with this hard fought win.

Bart'nil went ahead after 3 minutes from a penalty try, awarded after a scrum was stopped illegally. A yellow card was branded and Clevedon were down to 14 men.

Playing up the slope, 14 man Clevedon got an unconverted try and shortly afterwards a well struck penalty gave them a lead of 7-8.

The second half saw Clevedon score a converted try by Ed Martin and another penalty by Ethan Thomas, again with only 14 men on the on the pitch and at one stage with only 13!

Clevedon held out to avenge their 2 point loss earlier in the season. A good all round performance by Clevedon, despite the two technical yellow cards turning to red incidents.

Next week, Clevedon are away to Longlevens for a 14:30 kick off. THERE IS A COACH and it leaves at 12 noon, sharp. Join us for this last coach trip of the season, unless of course a cup run intervenes later in the season!

The seconds are at home to Bristol Harlequins, kick off 14:30.

CLEVEDON THANK SUPERSTARS

23rd February 2023
By Anthony Dauncey

CLEVEDON THANK SUPERSTARS
CLEVEDON THANK SUPERSTARS

Clevedon Rugby Club has thanked the quick thinking of players, staff and the emergency services following a medical emergency with one of its second XV players following a league fixture against Nailsea and Backwell earlier this month.

Bradley Summerell collapsed at full-time after suffering a cardiac incident, but thanks to the actions of club Medics Lizzie Newell and Amy Thompson, Club director Nat Fear as well as teammates Tom Wain, Ollie Jones and Brent Manners followed up by the response of the emergency services, within 48 hours Brad was recovering at home.

After returning home Brad said “It was a blocked artery. So they put a stent in and cleared it. They said it was due to genetics and bad luck".

Clevedon RFC director of rugby Tony Dauncey said, “ as a club we put a high value on looking after our players and Lizzie is one of the best Medic’s we have had, without her skills and cool head in this situation I have no doubt we would be dealing with a much different outcome."

The incident unfolded immediately after the final whistle of a thrilling match between Clevedon and Nailsea 2nds, the game finished with N&B thwarting a final attack from the home side to take a narrow win, both teams shook and Clevedon walked to form a tunnel, at this point Brad collapsed fortunately his brother in law Oli Jones and off duty fireman Tom wain were at hand to check his airways and put him into the recovery position, Club director Nat Fear rushed to support and quickly realising all was not well they called the 1st XV pithchside medic Lizzie to assist.

Upon assessing the situation Lizzie and assistant Amy quickly realised this was a potentially dire situation, calling for the defibrillator, the 1st team match was abandoned as the pitches were cleared for the air ambulance. As the situation escalated Lizzie had to discharge the defibrillator and administer CPR but amazingly Summerell was joking with paramedics just 10 minutes later before being transported to BRI via ambulance.

Dauncey commented “ the situation escalated really quickly, we could see the 2nd’s had a tight finish, and our 1st XV had just scored to put the game out of reach against the highflying Longlevens. Then I noticed some people running across the pitches and noticed one of our boys was on the floor, I then noticed that he was receiving CPR and the situation was serious." “the actions and speed of thought was unreal, our players and medical team were giving Brad first aid within 60 seconds, The first ambulance was there within 7 minutes and the helicopter within 15 minutes, the situation went from being our worst nightmare to one of total relief in a short space of time as Brad joked about his availability whilst being lifted into the ambulance."

Bradley was operated on in Bristol Royal Infirmary before being released just 48 hours later as medics confirmed the fast actions of team mates and the medical team ensured and lasting damage was minimal. He is looking forward to recovering at home before enjoying a long planned family holiday and has plans to return to the rugby field next season.

As a result of this incident Clevedon RFC would like to thank the Air Ambulance service, paramedics and Clevedon United FC for use of their life-saving defibrillator. We would like to thank Nailsea & Backwell & Longlevens RFC for their support and understanding.

Brad & Emma would like to place on record their gratitude for the outstanding actions of Oli, Tom, Nat, Lizzie, Amy and Brent. Without their actions under extreme pressure, this could have had a very different outcome.

They would also wanted to say thank you for all the well wishes, cards and messages as there has been so many.

Finally they have a special thankyou to the RFU who have been in touch since the evening of the incident , they have offered every type of support at their disposal and have followed up checking on Brad and his family at every stage.

"Brian's try not enough"

After this try, Clevedon were only 3 points behind and looking good for an upset.

Unfortunately, several good attacking opportunities were wasted by unforced errors. On three occasions, BoS ran the ball back to score tries.

Definitely, one more game that got away from Clevedon.

Next week, Clevedon are away to Barton Hill for a 14:30 kick off. The seconds don't have a game this week.

Why not go up to Barton Hill and support the firsts? You can then zoom back to the club afterwards to watch the England game.

"Polar Opposite"

Cleve downed the Dons in ruthless fashion.

Clevedon were definitely not at the races this weekend and as Tom O'Connell said in the Clevedon bar afterwards, it was the polar opposite of last week when Clevedon beat Longlevens.

The Clevedon performance was unexplainable, inexplicable, gob-smacking and any other adjective or phrase you might want to use to describe this match with.

Whatever your choice of epithet, Cleve certainly played well and showed what cohesive and agrressive play can bring to a team performance. This was a game to forget for Clevedon, altough it will live long in the memory of those that were watching it.

Scratching the heads time for both players and coaches, but they'll find a way back as they take on Burnham-on-Sea next week at home, kick off is at 14:30.

Clevedon seconds are away to runaway league leaders, Chew Valley II.

"Mixed Emotions"

Clevedon won this game by preventing Longlevens from continuing their scoring in the second half, although it didn't look the likely outcome after the first half.

Clevedon's second half performance was really gritty and determined stuff, stunning Longlevens with their attacking onslaught and great defence.

There was a decent crowd watching and with the seconds playing on the adjacent pitch, The Vale was busy despite the Six Nations games on the telly.

This was a well deserved win for Clevedon, who saw the game finish a couple of minutes early due to an emergency on the second team pitch.

Thankfully, the player is recovering in hospital after the heroic CPR exploits of the physios and the ambulance service.

Thank you all.

Next Saturday, Clevedon are away to Cleve for a 14:30 kick off.

Please Note: The seconds are now away to Oldfield Old Boys, which was originally advertised as a home fixture.

Six Nations 2023 Round 1 results

The results are in!

Thanks to everyone that has entered this year's Six Nations prediction competition. Unfortunately, there are not as many as in previous years and the I reckon the blame can be laid fairly and squarely on the WFH culture.

Anyway, there are 12 people with all three results correct - are you one of them?

The position of everyone has been determined by the number of wins and then the individual tie-breaker points difference that is closest to the running tie-breaker total.

For example, in Kerry's case her tie-break number is 623 and the running total tie break number is 149. Therefore, 623 minus 149 equals 474, which is the lowest of the 12 people with 3 wins. Clear as mud, don't you think?

If you have any queries or think your entry is incorrect, please make yourself known to us and we'll endeavour to sort it out.

"New Shirts Debut"

Top of the table Cinderford II came calling last week and they are running away with the league.

It'll do them no good as promotion isn't an option for them!! They're stuck in our league until the RFU decide otherwise. Please read RFU, Regulation 6, Appendix 2.3(d) for clarification.

Clevedon played their heart in this game, and had they taken their chances, could've increased their scoreline.

Clevedon's solitary try and conversion came from the usual duo of Largenton and Thomas, but came close on several other occasions.

Ill-disciplined Cinderford were marched back 10 on several occasions and eventually the ref had enough and yellowed their captain and Gloucester U20 centre.

Unfortunately, Clevedon couldn't capitalise on this and that was that!

Next week, Clevedon have two home games. The 1st XV take on second placed Longlevens, whom we have never played before in the leagues. The 2nd XV have a local derby against Nailsea & Backwell II. Kick off for both is at 14:30, but may well be earlier given it's a Six Nations day. Watch this space.

Weave: Will Egerton scores......

Due to the inclement weather and with The Vale under water, this game was played on the school pitch in Holly Lane.

Clevedon playing up valley and down the slope and with the elements in their favour struggled, in the early exchanges, to overcome a lively and determined Cheltenham North side.

After going 5-0 up with a try by Will Egerton, Clevedon made hard work of getting their next score, which came towards the end of the first half.

Before then though, a great counter-attacking move by the the visiting side's fly half saw Cheltenham North level the scores after 20 minutes. A further try by the industrious Rudy Gates made the score 10-5 at the break.

At half time, the home supporters were restless until the ever reliable Largenton scored one of his trade mark tries to put them at ease, 17-5.

A penalty be Ethan Thomas increased the lead and then another try in the dying minutes by Two-Try-Bry, secured the bonus point and a fourth win on the bounce for Clevedon.

This week, Clevedon 1st XV are playing Chipping Sodbury away, under lights, on Friday, 20th January. Kick off is at 19:30.

Weave:Ed scores the fourth try...

No one was expecting it to rain before the match, but it did. It made a mockery of the morning pitch inspection for frost as the pitch soften up nicely.

The game was anything but soft as it was a genuine local derby contest between two teams that have had years of rivalry. It was just a hard fought, hard tackling game full of commitment and also full of silly errors due to the conditions.

Clevedon enjoyed the majority of possession and territory. They secured their bonus point with the fourth try deep into the second half when Avonmouth were reduced to 14 men for some technical scrum infringements and a wee bit of chat.

Avonmouth are currently in a rebuilding phase just as Clevedon were at the end of last season and given time they will "Be back"! Good luck for the rest of the season.

Next week, Clevedon firsts are away to Barton Hill for a 14:00 kick off and the seconds are at home to Bristol Telephone Area for 14:15 kick off.

Some say it was a stitch up. Some say it was just bad luck. Whatever it was, Clevedon's "three-months-into-the-job" president was the recipient of the last draw prize. He had to wear it until he left and then hand it back - shame!!

He can consider himself lucky as it was a brand new, tie-dyed lab coat that was as clean and tidy as his underpants. Apparently, it is to be a "Ravens" home game theme from now on, so it could get messier as the season progresses.

Thanks for the lovely buffet - see you next season or maybe in one of the cups in March, who knows?

Crunch: Andy Davis scores...
Crunch: Andy Davis scores...

Playing up the escarpment in the first half, Clevedon were soon 7-0 down after N&B rumbled close and eventually over the line using gravity to assist their shove.

Soon after the restart, Clevedon scored a try of their own through Andy Davis after a skittling run up the touch line by captain Charlie Tucker. Seven all after 10 minutes or so.

Another unconverted try each saw the first half end 12-12. Little did anyone know that another 35 points would be scored, most of which were when each team was a man down.

Weave: Trolley scores...
Weave: Trolley scores...

At one stage, Clevedon were 19 points clear with ten minutes to play. Looking good we all thought, but a yellow card meant Clevedon had to step up their tackling, which they did. Despite the heroics, N&B scored 2 tries, one of which was converted as they rushed their drop goal coversions in search of the decisive score.

Two minutes remained for Clevedon to hold out and they managed to do so superbly, albeit a bit of nervy one for the travelling Clevedon horde.

Well done you Clevedon lads and a performance thoroughly enjoyed by Clevedon legend, Neil O'Rourke who said
"It was great to watch. Thoroughly deserved win. Some great forward powerplay and the tackling was very aggressive. Superb effort from all the boys. You should all be proud."

Accolades don't come any better than that.

Next week the firsts are at home to Avonmouth, kick off 14:15 and the seconds are away to Winscombe, also for a 14:15 kick off.

Thommo: George Angel flies high...
Thommo: George Angel flies high...

To watch this game under lights you needed 20-20 vision, especially when play went into those darker corners on the opposite side.

Okay, for the young'uns but not so good for the old boys. In fact, the players from both sides had trouble spotting those high kicks, which led to a number of errors that added to the excitement.

Clevedon started brightly enough, but were undone by a long speculative, defensive across the try line pass in the first 5 minutes. Yep, you've guessed it. Clevedon fumbled and gave BoS an early Christmas present. Clevedon were playing catchup from then on.

On balance, Clevedon had the better of the game overall, although BoS had the edge in finishing when they had the chance, with their hard running, large centres and second rows doing the damage. It was that close a game that Clevedon could've nicked it, but heyho they didn't and we move on.

It was another committed and dogged game by Clevedon who left BoS with 5 and 5 record in the league. They now look forward to their home game against Longlevens in a fortnight.

These mobile pics are not up to the usual professional Canon camera quality but they still give you a good spectators eye view of the conditions.

See you at home this afternoon when the Saxons take on Chew Valley seconds, kick off 14:30.

Will Trollope earned his 200th Clevedon Cap last night at Burnham, under the lights.

Appointed Club Captain in 2020, Trollope signed for Clevedon under Nick Hill in the 2014 season and has played the majority of his rugby in the 1st XV.

Trolley lives up to his nickname "The Troll" on the feild and can be a fearsome runner with the ball, but is one of the nicest characters you could meet off of the feild.

A winning jug...
A winning jug...

Due to the inclement weather, this game was transferred to the school pitch in Holly Lane. It proved to be a masterstroke as Clevedon went 12-0 up in the first half, playing with the elements that were heading up the picturesque Swiss Valley.

The second half, by all accounts, was a determined effort against tough opposition, but even tougher weather conditions. The defence of the far downhill corner must've been something to watch, especially when those Old Bees got a converted try back.

The coaching staff were happy and the absent president was also happy, so much so that he stumped up for a jug, yet to be paid for!

A good win in a difficult place to win. Playing at the school is not the advantage it used to be for Clevedon as they haven't played there for years; the weather must be bad. Having to transfer all the playing paraphernalia is not an easy task, so I was glad I was at a 10 pin bowling birthday party in Torquay {;>)

Cinderford II 87 Clevedon 12

29th October 2022

Weave: Charlie Tucker scores...
Weave: Charlie Tucker scores...

For us old boys travelling to Cinderford, it was a trip down memory lane. We last played them in the 2004-2005 season, at first team level, when we narrowly lost both games. Cinderford won the league that year and haven't looked back since.

Cinderford II are playing in the RFU leagues for the first time and without doubt, a team to be reckoned with. A valiant and determined effort by Clevedon was not enough to stop Cinderford's all round game. Most of their tries were from their very close support play when Clevedon ran out of tacklers.

Clevedon however can be proud of their efforts. After going 0-7 down within the first five minutes they camped on Cinderfords try line, pounding away and scored a well grafted try by Charlie Tucker.

Cinderford scored at regular intervals to keep their home supporters happy and Clevedon rounded off the game with a try by Bryan Largenton - yes, another one!

The coaching staff weren't too despondent and the boys knew they were well beaten. They will all learn a lot from this game, just like those first teams from years ago, who came up against clubs like Hartpury College and Mounts Bay who were on their way up.

Next week, Clevedon are at home to Cleve for a 14:30 kick off and the seconds are away to Oldfield Old Boys.

Chairman Tucker Remembers

By Mike Thomas

Clevedon played at top of the table Cinderford in very wet and windy conditions. Clevedon played with the elements in the first half and settled down quickly and took an early lead through two Mike Lowis penalties. Clevedons' forwards were awesome in the loose with Joe Harwood outstanding, well supported by John Potts , Neil Tucker and the rest of the pack. Ironically in poor conditions Clevedon;s line out was superb with James Shopland and Wayne McMillan leaping like salmon to the Gallagher pitches. Clevedon were unlucky not to score on several occasions, but tended to kick ahead when the ball should have been kept in hand. Before the interval Cinderford scored a well engineered try, but Clevedon led 6-5 at half time.

Crunch: Tucker the prop
Crunch: Tucker the prop

The second half saw Clevedon put up a gutsy display into the wind and rain. The forwards continuing their close support driving with Biggins pouncing on every loose ball and Dave Rawle always in the thick of things. Clevedon's defence was superb and they restricted Cinderford to only one converted try. Ashely Vailes was a terrier at scrum half and Dan Filby at fly half had a safe pair of hands. Tom O'Rourke and Tom Thie in the centre put up stout performances while wingers Dalera and Johnson had opportunities to score. Captain Mike Lowis again proved a solid last line of defence and plenty of flair in attack. Cinderford sealed victory with three late penalties.

Next Saturday the 1st XV are at home to Clifton, 15:00 kick off.

A crazy old game, won by a Clevedon side with two players less than they started with, sounds interesting doesn't it?

The fact that Cleve also finished the game with a two player deficit shows just how interesting it was!

Fortunately, Clevedon were well ahead before the handbags, which meant that the last quarter of an hour was played rugby league style with defence being the key. Attacks from both teams were nullified almost immediately as the game drifted to an anti-climatic end with everyone disappearing to the bar to avoid the incoming rain.

A good win nevertheless for this fast improving Clevedon side and an excellent MOTM one for Joe Williams, the wise old head of the team looking after the young'uns!

Weave: Jack Davey scores on debut

Clevedon travelled up the M5 after a weeks break looking to reverse their form after losing two winnable games in recent weeks. Their hopes were thrown into turmoil however, with the late withdrawal of three players including skipper Crew through injury.

Tucker came into the hooker shirt and picked up the captain's armband, whilst Davey made his debut on the wing with Fisher moving to fullback and the evergreen Williams coming in at 9.

Clevedon started well and shocked the home side with a brilliant counter attack that saw Fisher cross the line and Thomas convert to go 0-7 up after four minutes. Five minutes later, a good build up with strong runs from Ed Martin and Will Trollope, then a bullocking run saw the leagues leading try scorer Brian Largenton stretch the lead to 0-12.

Clevedon now started to dominate the set piece with Lugtig, Tucker and Fear strong in all areas of play. Despite spirited play from the home team in the Clevedon 22, they never looked as if they would cross the visitors line. In fact it was Clevedon who went close as Largenton was penalised for running into his own player in the act of scoring.

On 34 minutes Livingstone broke the home teams' hearts after a promising attack was well defended. From the following scrum just outside the 22, Adam Livingstone went on the rampage beating five would be defenders on his way to a 65 yard score to make it 19-0 at the break.

The second half saw the visiting seasiders come out strongly and sustained pressure saw a saw Clevedon attack from deep. A chip and catch from Thomas released Commrie, who found Thomas again before he offloaded to Fisher for his second try of the game and a 0-26 lead.

Now came North's only spell of sustained pressure. A mistake in exiting from the kick off gave Cheltenham good field position. This was then backed up by a lost line out, a following a penalty and a couple of loose tackles that the home side scored to give Clevedon a wake up call.

North smelt blood now and threw everything they had at the blue and golds. However, despite a questionable yellow card for Egerton, North wouldn't cross again. After soaking up pressure, a turnover at the breakdown from Trollope and Williams saw Clevedon exit. Thomas kicked deep then substitute Warren Taylor pounced on a loose ball before releasing Thomas for a try, which he converted.

It was one way traffic now as Cheltenham were broken hearted. Sustained pressure saw Davey cross in the corner for a try on debut, before Fisher wrapped up his hat-trick after supporting a Livingstone break in the last play of the game.

All in all a great performance on the road against an improving North side. However, there will be tougher games in the coming weeks and this young side will look forward to taking on those challenges.

Old Bristolians 33 Clevedon 24

"Three Try Bry"

Three Try Bri

Clevedon's power game not enough as they fall short in Failand

Clevedon travelled to Old Bristolians looking to improve on the previous weeks disappointing performance but knowing that the dangerous hosts were far better than their league position suggested.

The hosts started with a bang, their high speed possession based game plan stretching the visiting Clevedon defence and only a great last ditch tackle from Matt Fisher saved an early try.

The hosts continued to press for the early score and after great defence the Blue and Golds were caught napping when a quick line out on half way created an overlap and Bristolians took the lead.

The young Clevedon side responded well to this setback, a great chase from the re-start created a mistake from the following scrum that set the tone for the rest of the day. A solid set piece gave Fisher the chance to attack the blindside forcing a penalty.

Clevedon kicked to touch, won the line out and started to drive towards the line causing the hosts to collapse the maul illegally.

Thomas kicked to the corner again, the line out was won and after a couple of drives, Brian Largenton saw a gap and crashed over for his first try of the day.

Both sides were now playing good phase rugby, however Clevedon's lack of patience was showing, often kicking the ball away or overplaying when ball retention was the order of the day. After the visitors missed touch, Bristolians showed how it was done, running through the phases and earning repeated penalties until they crashed over in the corner to restore their lead.

Clevedon turned back to their power game. A great restart from Thomas was pressured by Gates and Fear forcing a penalty. Thomas kicked to 10 yards out from the corner, Skipper Crew found George Angel in the line out, the drive was set and Largenton touched down at the back of a powerful maul.

Thomas added the conversion and 3 minutes after going behind it was 12-12 but that didn’t last for long.

It was now Bristolians turn to pressure a kick off, forcing Clevedon to spill the ball, Old B's soon capitalised on this, swinging the ball from side to side before outflanking the visiting defence to restore their lead.

Clevedon again responded and turned over another re-start. This time they were patient moving the ball left and right before earning a penalty. Fisher took a quick tap and broke through before feeding Rudy Gates who was unlucky to be stopped just 5 yards out.

But just five minutes later, a solid scrum allowed Clevedon to run a set play and good hands from Thomas, Harrison and Poulter released Mason Parslow down the left. The ball was recycled inside the 22 and Old B's conceded a penalty. From the resulting line out Clevedon were held up. Just two minutes later, after repeated set piece penalties, there was a case of deja vu as Crew to Angel, driving maul, try Largenton was repeated.

Clevedon should have gone into half time all square and full of confidence. However, with just 90 seconds to play after creating an overlap in their own half, they again chose to kick possession away. The home side countered and gained good field position and with the last play of the half scored the bonus point try to restore their lead for a half time score of 22-17.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with Clevedon dominating the set pieces and earning regular penalties. However, some naive decision making saw Old B's counter attacking regularly.

As the half went one Clevedon grew into the game, retaining the ball for long periods. However, too often the final pass went astray, or the young visitors kicked the ball away. It was against the run of play when Old Bristolians scored another counter attacking try from deep in their own half with 7 minutes left to play.

It was do or die now for clevedon and with nothing to lose they threw everything at their hosts. A great challenge at the kick-off from Will Egerton earned a penalty. Thomas drove B’s back into their 22 and from the line out the home side stopped the drive illegally. The visitors repeated and with the maul heading to the line, the home skipper stopped it illegally. The referee had no hesitation sending him to the bin.

Clevedon opted for the scrum 5 yards out and got the nudge on and when the home side stood up the ref had no choice but to award a penalty try. However, much to the visitors surprise there wasn't another yellow.

All the momentum was now with the young visitors. With just minutes left and only 3 points in the game they tried to play from their own line and a mistake led to a turn over and the killer blow for the home side.

Clevedon will be gutted to have lost this game but are learning every week. They will be stronger for this experience and are looking forward to a chance to put things right at Cheltenham North on 15th October.

"Two Try Bookends"

Weave: Cal Fear on the charge
Weave: Cal Fear on the charge

Clevedon started this game with intent and purpose, scoring two converted tries within the first 20 minutes.

All was looking good for nice win. However, Barton Hill had other ideas as they decided to use the power of their pack to unleash their direct running backs.

Clevedon were left floundering for forty minutes as Bart'nil rattled up converted tries to take the lead, which they held until the final whistle.

With the score 17-33, Clevedon woke up for the last twenty, scoring two more converted tries to make the score 31-33 with five minutes left.

Was the comeback on? The hopeful locals thought so until the last lineout in Barts half went astray.

The travelling ref from Liverpool, who had a very good game, blew the final whistle to leave a hugely disappointed Clevedon talking about "ifsbutsandmaybes".

Still 2 league points is not to be sniffed at and with the help of the new tech, the coaching team will hope to turn it around for next week.

For the second week running, Clevedon 2nd XV did not have a game as the shortage of referees meant the game had to be postponed.

Clevedon 1st XV are away at Old Bristolians next week, kick-off is at 15:00. The 2nd XV are at home to Old Sulians, ref permitting.

A quirky bounce on the bone hard Avonmouth pitch resulted in a try for Ryan Hervey, who couldn't believe his luck.

A long kick, looking like it was destined for touch, bounced a yard inside the line. Avonmouth players stopped, Hervey didn't as the ball bounced wickedly into his hands. He faultered, expecting the whistle and ran in under the posts for a converted try, giving Clevedon a two score 8-17 lead with 12 minutes left.

The rest of the game belonged to Avonmouth who pressured the Clevedon line. They got a penalty with 4 minutes to go that gave the Clevedon old boys some concern.

Fortunately for Clevedon they held out and the old boys survived.

Clevedon 1st XV are home next week against Barton Hill, kick-off is at 15:00. The 2nd XV are away to Bristol Telephone Area.

Largenton scores again
Largenton scores again

A five try game, two yellow cards, wrong decisions, great defence and missed tackles in equal measure from both teams, summed up this game.

The forty five minute first half ended with a try wide out by N&B after a stagnant midfield slugfest in the hot sunshine.

Clevedon scored next through the prolific Largenton, but could not capitialise when N&B went down 13 men after a couple of yellows for naughty behaviour.

N&B showed why they won their league last season with two more tries through their back line and one from a catch and drive.

They're the team to keep an eye this season that's for sure.

Clevedon on the other hand know that they have some work to do as is always the case when a new team comes together. George and Dauncey know that and will rectify things in time for the away game to Avonmouth next week, kick-off is at 15:00.

By "Dead Balls"

Slow out of the blocks this week, didn’t feel much like writing a mildly amusing piece about Rugby after the news came from Balmoral of the Queens death.

The Queen had been in the job since I was in rompers and was the one solid fixture in the lives of many of us. No matter what trials and tribulations the country was going through she could be relied on to smile, wave and encompass everything good about this green and pleasant land.

For one who swore allegiance to her on a couple of occasions it is a time of great sadness and I’m pleased this column gives me the chance to pay tribute to her. She was a “one off” and will be missed by a great many.

So, to the rugby, seems we got a bit of a spanking by Nailsea and Backwell. All I would say is it’s early in the season and as a new side we will get better, and we probably have a bit to learn. This is not an easy league, and neither is the one Nailsea and Backwell came up from. They have obviously hit the ground running after last season and will be a handful for any side in this league.

What we must be able to do though, is put points on the board when we are men up through cards. Not as easy as it sounds I know but something to work on. We did a bit better than Barton Hill did last week and we can put things straight when we play them on their tump.

Avonmouth this week so things don’t get any easier. Not the force they were but always up for the fight (and sometimes a bit of Rugby). In the shadow of the M5 our boys will have to be at their best to get the win. I wish them luck and look forward to watching them.

Midsomer Norton 26 Clevedon 32

6th September 2022

By Anthony Dauncey

Largenton burrows and scores
Largenton burrows and scores

Clevedon opened the season with a hard fought 26-32 win at Midsomer Norton, whilst the Saxons slayed the same opposition 45-7.

A different looking Clevedon side started the season with a tough away fixture at Midsomer Norton, a side who had beaten them twice last season.

Following a raft of retirements there were four debutants in George Angel (joined from UWE), Ed Martin (Tsf from Dorchester) along with Brent Manners and Alfie Harrison who have graduated from the club's fantastic youth section. The visitors also welcomed back Joe Williams and Warren Taylor into the 1st team after spells away.

The travelling seasiders had the benefit of playing with the strong wind and started the stronger team. Their hard work in pre-season showing as they moved the home team around and made ground at the breakdown. After 4 minutes, good hands created a gap and scrum half Matt Fisher didn't need asking twice as he raced away for the first try of the season. Fly half Balcombe adding the conversion.

This early score sparked a response from the home side and they countered the visiting blue and golds. However, they didn't have an answer to the strong set piece and structure of their guests. Powerful runs from debutant Ed Martin and the ever reliable Lugtig saw space created for Harris, who didn't need asking twice as he raced clear to the corner to make the score 0-12 after 16 minutes.

Now the boys in blue and gold were on the front foot with new skipper Crew, previous incumbent Largenton and Angel to the fore. It was no surprise when defensive pressure in the home sides half created a turnover. Fast hands from Williams and Harris released Manners who didn't need to be invited twice. He took his chance to stretch the lead to 0-17.

Another debutant George Angel was next over the line. The visitors were now running riot and at 0-22 after 27 minutes it looked as though it could be a cricket score.

On 28 minutes, the referee lost patience with the home side killing the ball at the breakdown and sent a man to the bin, forcing uncontested scrums and removing all momentum from the visiting team.

The young Clevedon side lost their shape as the midfield was flooded and tried to play a looser game, which invited the spirited Norton side back into the game. They didn't need asking twice and after a spell of hard midfield running and repeated penalties, their powerful centre broke through the midfield to score under the posts. This spurred the home team and shortly after Fisher was sent to the bin after one to many penalties from Clevedon. However, stern defence kept the score at 7-22 going into half time.

Cap'n Jack Crew
Cap'n Jack Crew

At halftime, Clevedon knew they had a job on their hands, playing into an ever strengthening wind against a resurgent home side. Added to this, the impressive Lugtig failed a HIA to be replaced by Tucker in the front row and Trollope was replaced by Taylor.

The second half started with a bang, Midsomer Norton desperate to maintain their momentum and with a refreshed Clevedon side desperate to wrestle it back.

There was a further setback to the blue and golds when the impressive Commrie left the field following another ferocious tackle. The first 10 minutes of the second half was played in the visitors 22, however no matter what the home side tried, they couldn't break through the blue and gold wall. This defence finally led to a turnover and quick hands down the left saw Harrison released and he showed everyone what the hype was about as he gassed the cover defence to make it 7-27 and surely to put the game out of sight.

Norton hadn't read the script though and countered immediately, breaking through the visiting defence only to be halted on the 22. However, this saw Harrison leave the field with an injury to be replaced by Wills.

Shortly after, the line was breached and the home side were back in the game at 14-27.

The next 15 minutes were an arm wrestle as the home side used the wind and their powerful runners to pin Clevedon in the 22 whilst the Seasiders counterpunched with their dominant set piece and offloading game, twice breaking through before being called back for marginal forward pass decisions.

On 71 minutes the ever reliable Clevedon pack took things into their own hands. Another scrum penalty on opposition ball, a kick to touch and a well drilled line out saw Clevedon set up phase play. A resurgent Largenton took advantage of tiring defenders to break through and make valuable ground. Carries from Trollope, Fear and Taylor gained good ground before Largenton crashed over to put the game out of sight.

There was a late scare as the seasiders switched off and Norton scored two quick tries, but any hope of an unlikely come back was killed by the tackling of Williams who created a turnover. The following scrum was a formality when Balcombe cleared the ball to end the game 26-32 in the visiting teams favour.

In spells Clevedon were brilliant against a resilient Midsomer Norton, however there will be tougher times to come and we still have loads to work on if we are to maximise our potential.

Clevedon Saxons also picked up a home win against Misomer Norton II with a 45-7 scoreline.

A view from the touchline

The winning huddle
The winning huddle

Well, here we go again, autumn upon us and the first game of the season done and dusted.

This is what I hope to be the first of many reports from the touchline through the coming season. For those who don’t know me, good! for those who do know me try and keep it under your hat, I already get the occasional death threat from people who read my views in the church magazine.

What this column does give me is a chance to congratulate Cruncher on his election to president of the club. This shy, retiring understated introvert has been a servant of the club for over five decades (as long as Nailsea and Backwell have existed) and no one deserves the honour more.

This week our boys travelled up to the foothills of the Mendips to play old rivals Midsomer Norton, this is one of the youngest sides I has seen Clevedon field for some years, and they reminded me a little of the young side that took us to the verge of national league 3 in the 90’s (heady times). In the first half Clevedon flew out to a 17-0 lead and all appeared to be plain sailing for them. The pack had the opposition going backwards faster than an Italian tank and in the lineout they have found a young man (I’ll learn the names as the season goes on) who is part second row, part Polaris Missile; his ability to get above the opposition was peerless.

Due to injury and a yellow card for MN the game went to uncontested scrums for a period, and this seemed to be a bit of a turning point in the game. Clevedon losing their dominance in the scrum gave MN a toehold in the game with which they were able to turn the tide.

At half time we from Clevedon still had our chests puffed out and were ready to engage the opposition crowd in light-hearted banter, safe in the knowledge our lads were going to bring a win home.

As the second half progressed the dreaded “C” word reared its ugly head yes, Concussion.

I have to say it’s great to see our boys being properly cared for rather than having a damp sponge being slapped on the back of their neck with someone waving the Foreman’s farewell fingers in front of them and being told that’s close enough and thrown back into the fray.

This did however seem to alter the dynamic of the game and give MN further hope of a win, which they grabbed with both hands, a foot and probably a couple of body parts I didn’t see.

With a few minutes to go it looked entirely possible Clevedon could let this one slip away. But they dug in and came away with a hard won 26 – 32 win.

On the face of it, this was a close game at the end, but had Clevedon been able to kick all of the points on offer it would have been a far more convincing victory. But from my one-eyed point of view this was a great start to the season, dominant scrum, great lineout and a young back line that are only going to get better.

There have been times when Clevedon would have lost that one but they “Dogged” it out and got what they deserved, well done.

On the 14th of August the club lost another former player, Ben Carrol.

Ben sadly passed away after a long battle with illness. He will missed by his family and friends.

Ben played for Clevedon for many years, through the junior section, colts and then onto the senior section where I am honoured to say we played together many times.

Ben was one of the nicest people you could ever want to meet on or off the pitch. A real gentleman.

A service of celebration will be held at St Andrews Church, Clevedon at 11.30am on Tuesday, 6th September followed by a private committal.

Sleep well old friend, Tucks x

New President Appointed

22nd August 2022

Alan Crane - President
Alan Crane - President

At the August AGM, Alan Crane, aka Cruncher was appointed President of Clevedon RFC.

His tenure began without objections, so that was a good start for him. He follows in the very large footsteps of the previous President, Mike Thomas, who served with distinction for 18 years.

Alan joined the club way back in 1967 as a 16 year old. He played for many years until forced to retire early with a neck injury, amassing over 300 games during that time.

He continued his Clevedon rugby career by helping on training nights and supporting the club every week, with his loud and raucous voice urging the players on.

In the late nineties, he became the first team bag and flag man, which he did for 12 years. During this period he was awarded a life membership of the club.

In 2003, he was the winner of the Captains Tankard for his outstanding contribution to the club, particularly in the field of pooper-scooping at every home game!

I'm sure you'll all join me in congratulating Crunch as he starts this new chapter in his Clevedon Rugby life, which begins at a Somerset RFU AGM on Wednesday. A really exciting start for him!

He tells me he's looking forward to it and that he is hoping for great things this season, both on and off the pitch.
