Many thanks to the ladies for organising the raffle which made a fantastic £550.00 for general club funds.

Clevedon appoint Nick Carpenter-Brooks as head coach for the 25/26 season.

Clevedon RFC have appointed former Bristol Bears and England U18s player Nick Carpenter-Brooks as their new head coach.
Carpenter-Brooks who played at the highest levels of English rugby, steps into the role after assisting the club last season.
His appointment comes at a pivotal time for Clevedon RFC, as they look to build on recent progress and strengthen their squad under his leadership. Carpenter-Brooks experience as a professional player is expected to bring fresh insights and a dynamic approach to coaching.
Clevedon's Director of Rugby, Tony Dauncey, expressed his enthusiasm for the appointment, stating, "Getting Nick on board is a major coup for a club in our position. Nick is well known for his attention to detail and strong work ethic, and his delivery is excellent. Added to this, he was a Clevedon Junior and has grown up around the club, so will really buy in to the community".
Carpenter-Brooks is keen to combine his coaching role with a return to playing the game he loves and don the Blue and Gold for the first time as a senior player!

Clevedon U11's head to Twickers as Cup Champions

The under elevens will be making memories and representing the Bristol Bears at the Premiership Rugby Final at Twickenham in June.
Clevedon's U11s took the spoils at Bristol Grammer School, fighting off other fifteen other sides to earn a superb Bristol Bears Defender cup win. This has given the young Seasiders the right to represent the Bears at HQ before the Premiership Cup Final.
This is a fantastic and well earned opportunity, for this young side and their coaches and parents, to celebrate this success in front of a packed house at the home of English Rugby, an experience they surely will never forget.
If you or your business can support this young side with their trip to HQ, please contact Head Coach, Brad Summerell on 07714 598216

Webb Ellis Somerset Vase Final
18th April 2025
"The trilogy is over, the rivalry continues"

The trilogy of games this season ended on Thursday evening in Midsomer Norton's favour.
On a dusty Chew Valley pitch, that more resembled the Serengeti in the dry season than a rugby pitch in early spring, Clevedon ultimately fell short in their quest for the ornate glass, Webb Ellis Vase.
Norton were first on the scoreboard for a 7-0 lead and followed that up with a second for a 12-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Clevedon fought back hard and after several good passages of play, camped on Norton's line, scored a converted ty of their own, extracting a couple of yellows from their opponents in the process.
With Clevedon in the driving seat and looking dominant, the half time whistle blew with the score at 12-7, which in the final analysis was their undoing.
After a lengthy half time interval (or so it seemed) and with plenty of fluid to drink alongside the usual pep talk, the team were prepared to continue where they left off. The Clevedon supporters were in a hopeful mood.
That hope was short lived as Clevedon, although playing against 13 men, couldn't break down the Midsomer Norton defence and in fact conceded another score that was a shock to the system.
They never recovered from their sluggish second half start as Norton scored further tries. Some decent attacking rallies from Clevedon resulted in two more tries for them, but it wasn't enough and the final 47-21 scoreline said it all.
A deserved win for Midsomer Norton who attained a double triumph of league and Vase champions. Clevedon, meanwhile, will be picking over a lot of "if only" moments and can be proud of the way they performed in this match and all season.
Huge congratulations to Norton who won the trilogy of games, 2-1. Who knows we might meet again in the league above - watch this space.
It's difficult to pick Clevedon's MOTM, so for the fact he played the eighty plus minutes, tackled and drove his heart out, the award goes to William Trollope, aka "Trolly". A beer is yours when I see you next. 😉

"The trilogy ends on Thursday"
The trilogy ended on Thursday evening in Midsomer Norton's favour, who were good

Thursday night sees our 1st XV face Midsomer Norton in the Somerset Vase Final at Chew Valley (£5 entry), who will be looking to win the trophy for the third time. Our Seasiders have yet to win this competition - is this the time?
Both sides have tasted victory against each other this season. Clevedon won at the Vale and lost away last month.
With Midsomer Norton finishing as champions and Clevedon finishing second, this is a great showcase of Somerset rugby.
See you all there with a fiver in your hand!

"Clevedon concede cup match"
If you want an excuse, there isn't going to be one.
The simple fact of this concession is that Clevedon have run out of fit and eligible props. With a Somerset Vase match looming on Thursday evening, the return from injury of some of them is their overriding priority.
An AI flowery rewrite of what I'd originally written about player saftey is below - wierd!
"It's an unfortunate situation, but as we know, player safety is a top priority in today's world. The era when the bulkier backrow players casually drifted up to the front row is well behind us."
A look at the RFU results page this morning, for this week's cup games, reveals 72 teams have already conceded their matches of which Clevedon's game is just one.
Good luck to Bristol Saracens in the next round.

"Clevedon falter in the April sunshine"
The Clevedon coaching staff and players will be hiding behind the sofa when the replay of this game comes on. Not putting it on in the first place is probably the better option and would definitely save a few blushes.
The number of times a scoring pass went begging was off the charts. Having done all the good approach work to get within striking distance, Clevedon seemed a wee bit embarrassed to score given the posssession they had. Couple that with some defensive lapses that allowed the Rebels elsuive backs to flourish all over the park and you get an idea of what it was like to watch.
Saying that, Clevedon did secure two bonus points to finish second in the league behind Midsomer Norton, so it's not all doom and gloom, despite this match result.
Clevedon's next game is away to Bristol Saracens in the Papa Johns, Counties 2 South Plate competion on Saturday, 12th April. Kick off is at 15:00.
Other teams in this round are shown below in the pic.

"A gruesome revenge"
Midsomer Norton, fresh from their four walkover matches this year, did a murderous job on Clevedon up in the high veldt.
Clevedon, despite the sunshine and support didn't spark at all, playing into a strong wind. They conceded eight tries throughout the match and only briefly showed what they are capable of.
Let us forget the Clevedon woes for a moment and congratulate Midsomer Norton for winning the league and gaining promotion back to the league they should never have been relegated from in the first place. Whether Clevedon will follow them, having secured second place, will be decided by the league lottery after this weekend and during the summer.
It's no coincidence that Norton and Clevedon finished as the top two this season. The controversial relegations of last season, from 9th and 10th respectively, vindicated their pre-season protests.
However, the rivalry is not over. Clevedon will be playing Midsomer again on the 17th April in the Somerset Vase Final, away at Chew Valley, for a 19:30 kick off. This match will decide who will have bragging rights for next year.

"Clevedon Triumphant"

A shock, early converted try by Yeovil, within a couple minutes of the kick off, seemed to stir something primeval in Clevedon.
Within ten minutes or so of that opening score, Clevedon had notched four tries of their own as Yeovil were shunted and shoved everywhere, allowing Clevedon's attack to prosper.
Yeovil got one back to increase their score to 14, but again, Clevedon responded immediately with another try.
In perfect symmetry Clevedon scored five tries in each half, with the coaches using up their bench to good effect.
Yeovil's pack had a torrid time and were taken for "walkies" on several occasions, but stuck to their task despite being overpowered. Their lively backs kept Clevedon honest out wide, whose defence was excellent.
After this emphatic win, Clevedon will play their league rivals, Midsomer Norton, in the final sometime in April and at a venue to be decided by Somerset RFU.
However, before that date, Clevedon must play them away on the 29th March in what promises to be an intriguing match against the table-toppers, who are the league champions in waiting.
Please note that there are none of the usual pics, so no need to hunt for any!

A ding-dong win at home
This was the battle of second versus third with only a single point separating them in the table before the start.
Clevedon's intent was clear from the kick off. They tore into Avon and messed their pack up to such an extent that after a couple of bashes at the line the almost evergreen Josh Mortimore went in under the sticks for a 7 nil lead after two minutes.
Breathless stuff.
Five minutes later, Clevedon's forward dominance allowed Charlie Tucker to score his try for a 14 nil lead.
Avon were shocked and their conversations behind the posts showed it. They rallied for the next ten or fifteen minutes and pressed Clevedon's line, but couldn't break through the resolute and determined Clevedon defence.
After working their way back up the pitch and with another period of Clevedon forward dominance, Mortimore went in for his second, 21 nil.
Shortly after that, Avon harried Clevedon into a few errors and scored their only try, wideout, on the half hour mark.
After a period of stalemate, Clevedon had a penalty attempt right on half time, but it sailed narrowly wide for a 21-5 lead.
The second half was a slugfest with good rugby from both sides being cancelled out by good defensive work from both sides. Matt Mannion changed all that with an interception try in the last quarter and for Clevedon to get a bonus point that puts them 6 points clear of Avon (ignore the Pitchero table that says 5 points!!) and into second place.
Clevedon's next league game is against Wells away on the 22nd March, but before then they got a midweek cup match. See below.

"A statement win"
Clevedon visited Chew Valley and scored 12 tries to notch an emphatic win away from home.
Ten different players got over the whitewash in a variety of ways, which made for an entertaining game, if you'd travelled from the coast, that is!
A trundle over from a catch a drive two minutes in, set Clevedon's try-fest in motion, although it took a while to score their next at the end of the first quarter.
The scrum was the dominant force in this match, highlighted by this pic, that had Gilly playing "Peek-a-Boo" with the whole Chew Valley pack, allowing Tucker to wander down the blindside for his second.
A great win for Clevedon sets them up to consolidate second place in the league, at home to third placed Avon on Saturday. After a single point, last minute loss away from home at the end of January, Clevedon will be looking to use home advantage to retain that second place. The kick off is at 14:30.
Rebels give Norton a HWO - what's happening!

"Saxons unlucky"
Clevedon Saxons had the bare 15 for this match that in the end was the deciding factor.
They went down to 13 men through injury and were leading with five minutes left. A heartbreaking loss and a game they could've won with a full team. Still, at least we turn up and give it a go!

Congratulations must go Keynsham II who have won the league with two games to spare. They will be promoted next season, which means they could come into the current first team league. It all depends on whether or not there is another league rearrangement 🙄.
Keynsham took an early lead after a short kick off with Clevedon expecting the usual deep one. They racked up 35 unanswered points in the first forty, despite a valiant effort by Clevedon to restrict them.
New dad and Captain Wozza made sure the second half was a different affair. They won it 19-7 after several players, back from injury, were brought on to try their luck, and it nearly worked. Wozza was over the moon!
An entertaining game in the sunshine finished with Keynsham popping the champagne to celebrate and leaving the cork on the pitch!
Next week, the firsts are away to Chew Valley II while the Saxons are playing Old Reds III at home, 14:30 kick off.

Home & Away
Having to transfer the game to the Swiss Valley Stadium at Clevedon School used to be an advantage, but no longer. Transferring players, ropes, flags, post protectors and other playing paraphernalia, in the moist conditions, saps the resolve of even the hardiest club stalwart.
It also doesn't encourage the usual support, despite the change of venue being well advertise on socials and websites, which means the pre-match bar takings suffer alongside the pre-match chit chat.
Roll on the dry weather.
It was an advantage back in the day when most of the team played their school rugby there, but this team contains only a handful (if that) who have played on it regularly.
Consequently, coffin corner was never used in the second half when Clevedon were playing towards Posset. This would help explain why Oldfield won the second half 12-7. It could also have been because Clevedon had build up 31-0 lead in the first and went to sleep, but it's more likely a combination of both and the fact that Oldfield played a lot better than they did in the first.
A mention must go to try scorer Alfie Parsons who had the dubious honour of winning the MOTM award, and the Richard of the day gold lame top for referee backchat, which resulted in a halfway penalty after Oldfield had scored their second try. Two quick pints was his punishment!
Next week, the firsts are resting while the Saxons are playing Keynsham seconds at home, 14:30 kick off.

Another 50 pointer
With the Italy Wales game kicking off at the same time, the crowd was sparse, but enthusiastic.
Lewis O'Brien started the scoring from a close range scrum and screwed his face up in wild delight as his score saw the start of another Clevedon try fest.
Tries came a regular intervals and the scoreboard minders had a hard job keeping up at one stage. They muddled through until the final whistle, which went 10 minutes early. There was an injury to a Wells player who was still laying prone on the ground, as the play went on around him. 'Elf 'n Safetee took over and that was that. Game over.
The early end allowed those cold and steadfast supporters to watch the end of the international in the bar, where it was warm and cosy.
A welcome end to a another Clevedon home win.
Next week, Clevedon's visitors are Oldfield Old Boys who were victorious on their home ground earlier in the season and will be looking to do the double. The Clevedon team will have other ideas!
Kick off time TBD.
5th February 2025
No dramas this week!
Clevedon fielded four of last years colts and the first set of twins in the front row for quite a few number of years.
The Wilson brothers, Andy and Chris (or is it Chris and Andy?), supported by their whole family it seemed, took up two thirds of the front row, just like Alan and Simon Dunn did all those years ago.
They ran around like rabbits, closely followed by Vince Hale and debutant scrum half Keanu Ballard aka "Neo". They all kept the more established team mates playing at a higher tempo than normally would be the case!
Consquently, Clevedon slowly racked up the points to win in front of a large home crowd and those that had ventured out of Clevedon.
Clevedon have Wells at home this week for an early kick off (TBD) and the club will run a pre-match "Le Crunch" happy hour with reduced prices.

Round One Results

Thank you to everyone that has entered this year's Six Nations prediction competition.
After typing in 241 prediction entries, we can reveal that there are 135 people with all three results correct so far - are you one of them?
The positions have been determined, firstly by the number of wins and secondly by the individual tie-breaker points difference that is closest to the running tie-breaker total.
Edith McVeigh obviously wanted her fifteen minutes of fame as she's predicted a very low scoring competition this year and could be the winner if the remaining 12 matches have a combined score of 23 points each. Go Edie!
If you have any queries or think your entry is incorrect, please make yourself known to us and we'll endeavour to sort it out.

Please note that it's a 14:15 kick off this week away to Nailsea & Backwell, aka "The Ravens".
This week's youthful lineup highlights the talent that has come from the colts and is a sure sign that the Youth section is flourishing.
Hopefully, the young'uns won't notice the sloping pitch and will run around like rabbits, causing mayhem!
See you there.
The second team game has been postponed and the rearranged game will await sunnier and drier conditions.

Another cracking game Grommit!
This was a another game where Clevedon had a decent lead at half time and were looking good for the win. Unfortunately, it didn't work like that.
Avon had other ideas and never gave up despite Clevedon's relentless attacks. IF Clevedon had taken their clear cut chances when they were given them, it could've been a very different result.
As we all know, Ifs, buts and maybes don't win matches, so completing the chances offered in future games will help to relieve the tension.
Leaving it until the final minute to beat Minehead last week and leaving it until the final minute to lose to Avon this week is nerve-jangling stuff , for everybody!
Clevedon will be working hard in training to take those chances before playing Nailsea & Backwell away this week.
Clevedon rolled back the years by including veteran Mike Lowis in the centre, who added his usual bite to proceedings. He held up well for an old 'un and completed the 80 minutes, winning the coveted dirty gold lame shirt for his efforts.
20th January 2025
A cracking game Grommit!
For the large majority of the first half, Clevedon were in Minehead's half, wracking up 28 points in the process. They allowed Minehead just two visits into their half, which gave the visitors 10 points for a half time score of 28-10.
The second half was a complete mirror of the first as Minehead scored 22 unanswered points. It wasn't until the final two minutes of the match that Clevedon trundled over a close range scrum for the winning score. Cue mayhem!
To most observers it looked like Clevedon had chucked away an 18 point first half lead and were resigned to discussing how it got away from them. Fortunately, Clevedon found a way out of their mess and were rewarded with a very good win against a very good Minehead side.
This was one of, if not, the best game of the season so far and with third place Avon up next week, Clevedon will look to continue their resilient and defiant attitude on the road.

Something to look forward to...
The Vale will host Minehead Barbarians on Saturday, 18th January for a 14:30 kick off.
Clevedon will have ideas that they need to inflict an away defeat on the visitors after losing so ignominiously earlier in the season.
With the home pitch promising to be in decent nick, after this bout of drying weather, Clevedon will have plenty of home support to urge them on.
Emma's kitchen will be open for a pre-match snack to go with your pre-match pint, so give yourself plenty of time to enjoy both.
See you there.

A steady home win
With the seconds also at home against Gordano, the first team support was dwarfed by those watching the local derby on pitch 2!
All the noise came from the Gordano supporters. Their team ended convincing winners when Clevedon seconds ran out of replacements and, for a part of the game, played with only 14 men. Nevermind, the youthful and energetic youngsters that were in the side gained valuable local derby experience.
Meanwhile, the firsts dominated territory on pitch 1 to such an extent that it felt like a land grab from the wild west. Despite this first half advantage, Clevedon found it hard work to break down the resolute Bernadette's defence.
Through a series of defensive errors, Clevedon allowed the visitors to get into their 22 and score a very good forwards try just before the break.
The second half saw Clevedon improve their score by 12 points. The whole game was disrupted by yellow cards, which ended at two apiece.
For once, despite the inclement weather, "The Vale" held up and produced a firm and very playable surface. Other games in the league weren't so lucky and were postponed.
The game ended in very dark and gloomy conditions. The refs bright orange shirt being the only colour on view. An hour after the game saw the sleet and snow move in and the walk home after a few celebratory pints was challenging to say the least!
Next week, Clevedon firsts are away to table-toppers Midsomer Norton, in what will be an almighty tussle upon the Mendips. The kick will be at 14:30.
The seconds entertain table-toppers Keynsham seconds at home, for a 14:30 kick off.

Bosley starts on the bench

A mistake by the club Instagram operatives has veteran Blaise Bosley in the starting XV against St Bernadettes AND sitting on the bench?. He's good but, and even he would admit it, not that good!
He'll be benching and Alex Giltrow will start. Blaise will no doubt use his experience late on in a 20 minute cameo, which is always worth waiting for.
The sharp eyed amongst you will also notice that Chris Wilson is playing in both games. The truth is out there - get down to The Vale to find out where he will playing.
On pitch 2 (as we've got call it now, by order of Arthur Nichols!) the seconds are hosting Gordano seconds.
Both games kick off at 14:30. See you there.

Double Header Lost
A robust and enthusiastic Imperial side did the double over Clevedon in one swell foop. They harried and harrassed Clevedon at every turn and the visitors became a wee bit frustrated that their cunning plan was not that cunning after all!
With that said, Clevedon had their chances but didn't use the very strong wind to their advantage. Imperial, however mastered the home advantage wind and scored three tries to Clevedon's one.
Imperial were worth the win as their bigger personnel were fitter than first appeared and matched Clevedon for stamina and speed.
It was one of those away matches that Clevedon, again failed to gel and play as a team - perhaps their thoughts were on the impending visit of Mr Claus and his reindeers. Who knows?
Good luck to Imperial in the next cup round.
Merry Christmas everyone.

First Team for Imperial

After a pitch inspection, it has been decided, given the saturated state of the pitches, that the second team game against Old Reds III is postponed until the 8th February.
Get on up to West Town Lane instead for the first team game.
17th December 2024
"Double Header"

This week, Clevedon travel to Bristol Imperial for a double header match. There are league points up for grabs and also a semi-final spot in the Bristol Combination Vase competition.
There's a lot at stake, especially for Clevedon as their road trips haven't been anything to write home about. This coming week will be different, I'm sure.
The kick off at West Town Lane will be at 14:30 at the same time as the seconds host Old Redcliffians III at home.
On Sunday, a proper local derby game between Clevedon Colts and Gordano Colts, kicks off at 11:00 down at The Vale. Not one to be missed.
17th December 2024
"A very physical game"
Clevedon won this match in an emphatic and physical manner, scoring their first try within two minutes from a Hornets knocked on kicked off.
Despite conceding some soft tries along the way and being a man down after 41 minutes for a double yellow, Clevedon stepped up and looked nothing like the sides that had lost away to Oldfield and Minehead.
They had a purpose and clarity of playing that had the watching faithful wondering where it had come from.
It had come from the hard work and plain speaking at training by the coaching staff. The players rose to the challenge and kept the scoreboard operative busy all afternoon with 15 score changes throughout the match.
Wise old head Brian Largenton was seen passing on his wisdom to the young, straight out of colts hooker, Andrew Wilson. It must've been very good advice because he came on as the replacement hooker for 50 minutes of the match. It was great to see.
14th December 2024
"Game on at The Vale"
Clevedon face Hornets II and are looking for revenge after their narrow loss at the start of the season. The kick off is at 14:30.
The seconds travel to Winscombe for a 14:30 kick off and will hope to get back to winning ways and return victorious in time for the club Christmas Party.

This is an event NOT to be missed. There is bound to be all manner of silly outfits and costumes as there are prizes for the most eye catching. Judging will be done by an unknown celebrity who will announce the winner(s) around 22:00 before revealing themselves. 😉
7th December 2024
"Local Derby"
The first team game was postponed due that the wet and windy Darragh person, so Clevedon's only game was the seconds away to Yatton.
Everyone was wondering why it was on as many other fixtures throughout the leagues suffered as well.
As it was, the wind was chilly but the pitch was in great nick and a proper derby ensued. Clevedon went behind early on to a slicker Yatton side, and were trailing 14-7 at half time.
In the third quarter, Clevedon started a comeback, and scored two tries, one converted, to lead 17-19. They thought they would hold out for the win, but with only ten minutes left, Yatton struck back after a quick tap penalty and followed that up sharpish with two more well worked converted tries to win the game.
Bragging rights to Yatton!
The pre-match sit down lunch for 60 was excellent. A big thank you to chairman Jason Clark for inviting us. It was good to catch up with some "blasts from the past" and to swap years ago stories.
Yatton v Clevedon was always one to look forward to. 😉

"Referee is okay!"
Referee Adrian Johnstone, 79, was called up at the last minute, but his game ended just 15 minutes into the first half. He got absolutely battered around a ruck when a prop from either side double tackled him and flattened him. Although badly shaken and carrying an injured knee, Adrian restarted the game but was unable to continue.
He retired from the field of play and was, after much discussion, replaced by Tony Dauncey (level 2).
Clevedon were 7-0 up when this happened and Sulians levelled the scores just before half time. After the break, the game was an even affair with both teams threatening to score on several occasions.
Clevedon won the game with only ten minutes left when centre Johnny Hicks powered down the touch to score in the corner. The conversion from the touchline by Sean Leddy was as good as you'll see anywhere and Clevedon held on for the win.
The latest news is that Adrian is okay and is up and about, albeit with a bruised knee and a couple of cracked ribs! I'm not sure he's thinking about retiremeent, but with over 1550 games in a lengthy career, it's going to be a difficult one.
Get well soon, Adrian.

"Cavan Rugby Tour 2025"

We are looking for expressions of Interest in a senior club tour to Cavan.
Twenty four years on from our last official Clevedon RFC tour, we are looking to return to Ireland.
Thanks to a club member's connections we have the opportunity to be hosted by Cavan RFC and we are looking to combine a pre-Season tour match and a Vets/Social game.
Open to any club member over the age of 18 on departure, we will be looking to tour over the weekend of the 9th or 16th of August 2025.
Like all great rugby tours there will be club socials to help fund raise and loads for us to do once we are there. As well as the rugby, there are 17 pubs in the town. We could look to take in a GAA game Breffni Park (depending on fixtures) or try Fishing in one of the 365 lakes.
At this point, we are gauging interest to find out whether you are wanting to travel as a player, help organise or just to be a tourist. Please express an interest by requesting to join the Whatsapp group here.

"Seconds are at home"

Originally, the seconds were playing Bristol Telephones in the Somerset Vase. They were given a walkover and now play Midsomer Norton seconds instead in this rearranged league match. They progress to the semi-final and will play the winners of Yeovil/Wincanton game.
The first team Bristol Combination Vase game against league rivals Imperial, has been postponed and is rescheduled for the 21st December at 14:30. The game will be a double header with both league points and a semi-final place up for grabs.
17th November 2024
"A different performance"

With Clevedon fielding a few vets alongside the young'uns, they overcame a good Chew Valley second string with some great rugby.
Good defence restricted Chew to three tries that were scored through their backs. In the end though, Clevedon scored six tries and ended up comfortable winners with the old boys doing their bit.
Next week is supposed to be a cup week for the seconds against Bristol Telephones and for the firsts against Imperial. There is some doubt that these fixtures will be played then, but all will become clearer during the next week. Please check back for an update.

"Away day blues"
The trip to Oldfield near Bath was a hour long at least, but did include a picturesque drive over the toll bridge and past Bathamptom Mill.
That was as far as the good stuff went as the game was played in a grey old fug and wasn't the spectacle, from a Clevedon perspective, that the birthday boy was expecting. The minutes silence for Remembrance was a brief respite in the gloom and the game kicked off with Clevedon in confident mood.
Unfortunately, it was one of those games (again!) that is difficult to explain, performanace wise, unless you start trotting out the same, same old excuses, which I'm not!
I'm sure the "learnings!😉" will help this week when Clevedon are at home to Chew Valley II for a 14:30 kick off.
The seconds are away to Chew Valley III also for a 14:30 kick off.

"Clevedon Kit Finds New Life In Uganda !"

For many years now we have been supplying old kit to Uganda and to the Elgon Wolves and now the She Wolves, this is a great way of supporting these teams and when we get to see how they are progressing it really makes it all worth while. Check out the link below for the full report and more pictures !
The She Wolves, a womens rugby team based in Mbale, Uganda, have quickly become a force in the rugby community.
Established in 2019, the team is the sister team to Elgon Wolves, and it operates from the Eastern region of Uganda. Rugby was first introduced to Mbale by white settlers as tag rugby, with early coaching support from Coach Fortunate, who began training children.

In 2020, the region saw the formation of an academy aimed at developing young rugby talent, led by Madam Penina and Coach Anguma Stephen. Coach Anguma, affiliated with the Uganda Rugby Union (URU), played a crucial role in spotting and nurturing talent.
Noticing potential in the girls, many of whom had previously played netball in Bugema barracks, he encouraged them to shift to rugby, hoping they would one day join the national team.

"Forget the Analogy!"
Forget last week's silly analogy to describe a lacklustre performance from Clevedon down at Minehead.
This was a proper game of local derby rugby against the Nailsea & Backwell second string, a club we were playing at first team level before "The Relegation".
We had family connections on either side. The Giltrow brothers were up against each in the pack, with our Gilly coming out on top in the try scoring (five of) stakes!
They continued their head to head in the after match racing pint, MOTM awards, which our Gilly narrowly shaded!
That said, the game was as entertaining as you'll see all season and not just because Clevedon won. The Ravens played their part and troubled Clevedon with some strong and elusive running, testing the solid Clevedon defence.
There were a lot of very good performances from Clevedon who seemed to have found their cohesion again.
Let's hope it continues on the 9th November against Oldfield Old Boys, away for a 14:30 kick off.
Clevedon seconds lost at Bristol Harlequins by a few points. At least we sent a team away, unlike Cinderford whose second team gave Old Reds a HWO! The second walkover this season - what's going on in the forest?
The seconds are at home to Oldfield Old Boys seconds for a 14:30 kick off.
22nd October 2024
Next week, Clevedon firsts are playing Nailsea & Backwell seconds in the latest league match. Having played their first team last season before relegation came calling, Clevedon will be keen to win this one with a flourish.
As we all know, nothing is straight forward in this league, so it will need a solid, all round effort to secure a favourable result.
The kick off is at 15:00. Meanwhile, the seconds are away to Bristol Harlequins also for a 15:00 kick off.

"Sunday Lunch anyone?"
Last week, I went out for a Sunday lunch. It was perfect and everything was done to perfection, a couple of hard roasties, but nothing to worry about.
This week, I thought why not give it another go? It was that good the previous week, I wanted more of it.
I'd skipped a big breakfast, saving myself for the repeat Sunday lunch. It arrived at the table, a nice steaming belly pork with all the trimmings.
I was immediately overwhelmed with the portion size and the mountain of spuds and parships. It felt as if I was already full and I seemed to have no appetite to do it justice.
I persevered though and carried on tucking in. I thought I'd crack it, but unfortunately I was half a dozen roasties and a bit of veg short. Try as I might, I couldn't finish it off. I had to doggie bag the leftovers for next week, and look forward to the reheat with a little bit of chillie to spice it up.
However, there's always room for pudding (apple crumble and custard as it happens!) isn't there? It eased the disappointment of first course failure and I felt warm and cosy and revived.
I will try again next week and just enjoy what's put in front of me, rather than worrying whether I might not do it justice. Perseverance and tenacity is the key and I will endeavour to enjoy that perfect Sunday lunch, again.

"Table Toppers Topped"
Clevedon scored their first try in the 5th minute and their last in the 71st. It was a game that was as entertaining as it was nerve wracking, especially when Norton got it wide.
Clevedon coped really well with these attacks and their defence was immense, but unfortunately, a couple penalty reversals cost Clevedon two tries. This meant that the Midsomers got a bonus point and retained their top spot through points difference.
Clevedon's attack was going from strength to strength until a gratuitous (and not quite horizontal) tackle on opening try scorer Alfie Harrison saw him leave the field in a wee bit of discomfort. He was replaced by veteran Joe '200 cap' Williams who brought a tougher and more robust approach to the backline, aided by the always solid Harry Lyons.

The dependable kicking of Archie Birkbeck (21 the day before) kept the Clevedon scoreboard ticking over, which was just as well, because the visitors scored three unconverted tries to test Clevedon's resolve late in the second half.
The game was settled when Trolley barged his way over for a well worked team try.
It was a great home win and one that will do the world of good to Clevedon's confidence ahead of their next game away to fourth placed Minehead Barbarians.
Next week, Clevedon seconds have Midsomer Norton at HOME for a 15:00 kick off.
11th October 2024
"Commit now..."
THERE IS A COACH.
IT LEAVES AT 12 NOON.
SHARP!!
Non-players will have to stump up a fiver to help with the coach cost.
If you fancy coming down to Minehead for the first team game, please contact Tony Dauncey and let him know.
Thank you and I'll see you all there.
There will be a coach to Minehead providing enough people (20+) commit and pay a fiver.!
First team players are exempt of course, but Daunce still needs at least 15+ players to commit before he can justify the huge cost of a booking a coach.
Clevedon haven't played Minehead since before the leagues were introduced, way back in the nineties. They were a highlight of the season back then and there are still a few old boys about who remember those days and will know doubt reminisce about them. 😮 A trip to look forward to without a doubt.

"The Vale beckons..."
...come on down and enjoy a top of the table clash.
This is the first team selection for the match against table-toppers Midsomer Norton on Saturday, 12th October.
This is the second team squad for the match away against Keynsham.
11th October 2024
This was the end of season grand draw for 2023/2024. The winners are below and will be contacted forthwith.
In addition to these prizes, £1500 was donated to the club for the specific purpose of pitch and equipment maintenance.
This is in honour of past president Michael Thomas whose whitelining skills were a sight to see. Be in no doubt, the wavy lines on the seafront were modelled on his exceptional skills. 😊
The club also owe a great debt of gratitude to Ruth Thomas, who continued running the 200 club after Mike died in 2022. Ruth has done this for 30 years and is now handing the reigns over to others to continue their legacy.
Ruth doesn't want any fuss (her words) and has said she will be available to mentor the newbie taking her place. Thanks again Ruth.
1st October 2024

There is a huge day in the offing on Saturday with back to match matches and a reunion of old boys.
The first team take on old rivals St Marys (KO 13:30) in the Bristol Combination Vase, who they narrowly beat 8-6 in the 2002 Combination Cup final at the Memorial Ground.

Up and comimg legends will be playing in the charity vets match against Looseheadz Barbarians in aid of the rugby specific mental health charity, LooseHeadz. This follows the cup match at 15:00.
Post matches, Big Nath's pre-ordered BBQ (essential!) will be available, followed by live music and a raffle.
See you all there.

"A great away win"
Clevedon went up The Airfield in Whitchurch and produed another fine and exuberant win on the road. They find themselves second in the league, behind Midsomer Norton.

Next week, is a non-league weekend, but Clevedon have a game and are at home to St Mary's Old Boys in the Bristol Combination Vase. The kick off is at 13:30, followed by a vets game at 15:00

"A massive home win"
Clevedon played out of their skins in their first home game at "The Vale" since the great flood earlier in the year.
Tries were scored by an assortment of players at regular intervals, showing the wide range of skills they've been trhreatening for a while.
Clevedon fielded the Wilson twins at hooker and prop (the first set since the Dunn twins Alan and Simon, from the 90s), fresh from the colts and the brothers Tucker at 8 and 9. Brotherly love simply oozed from the pitch!
Clevedon thoroughly entertained the large crowd in the bright, warm and muggy weather.
The thunderstorm that was forecast happened on the pitch instead and everyone went to the bar happy, except of course, Imperial who were very generous in their defeat. They promised to open their infamous container bar for the return fixture before Christmas.
Next week, Clevedon are away to St Bernadettes, while seconds are at home to Gordano seconds. Both are a 15:00 kick off.

"Clevedon Vet's on Parade @ The Royal Marines Family Day"
Family Day Fun...
Home after a cracking weekend of rugby friendship, sunshine and a little cider - all whilst supporting the The Royal Marines Charity!
Clevedon RFC Vets had the absolute privilege of being invited to the CTCRM Corps Family Weekend to play The Royal Marines Association RFC Vets this weekend. Not many get that opportunity or to be led out on to a pitch like this!! ?🧡
What a truly amazing thing the rugby family is, the whole weekend was entrenched with the rugby ethos. Supporting each other on and off the pitch.
These guys, 80 minutes plus of pure battle, each and every one of them gave above and beyond - battered and bruised, coming off to then share stories, laughter, dancing and a little more cider, rugby is the winner.
LEGENDS - Players and Clevedon supporters too, those that stayed all weekend and to those that took to the M5 early for the match, loud and proud you were!
Thanks all!
Learning point: "What happens in The Mess, stays in The Mess!"
17th September 2024
"A very even contest"
A great local derby ended with the home side victorious, scoring a try with 2 minutes of the game remaining.
Clevedon had one last chance to win it and when the restart went their way, the great escape was on. Unfortunately, after a few phases, it was all over as Hornets secured a turnover on their 22 and that was that.
A close one for Clevedon who will rue their missed chances. They can take heart from the way they tackled and defended, keeping Hornets pinned in the own half for long periods.
It was through the excellent kicking of flyhalf Archie Birnbeck that put Clevedon in front with 10 minutes to go, and the win was waiting for them.
Alas, it withered away with that late try and the disappointment will put aside as next week, Clevedon firsts are at home to Imperial for a 15:00 kick off. The seconds travel to Old Reds.

7th September 2024
Clevedon's first foray in their new league saw them travel down the M5 to Taunton to the Richard Huish college and to their pitch that seemed to be in the back of beyond.
In fact it wasn't, but it just seemed like it driving down the bumpy farm yard track that ran behind the cricket club (too far for a pre-match pint!).
It reminded me of playing rugby back in late sixties, only this time there were no sheep to shoo off before kick off!
The game kicked off and Clevedon were immediately on the attack that resulted in a typical Largenton try after five or six minutes.
Clevedon were dominant in the first half, leading 25 nil when the whistle blew.
A nasty elbow injury to Lewis O'Brien at the end of the first half, caused some disruption and a reshuffle of the pack. Consequently the beginning of the second half was not as fluid as the first and Rebels scored first, with a well worked try.
Thankfully, Clevedon recovered their mojo and scored two more tries, one a final minute penalty try, while Rebels scored another for a final scoreline of 12-37.
A very good start for Clevedon and injuries aside, looked in good nick as a result of a productive pre-season.
Next week, Clevedon firsts are away to Hornets seconds. Kick off 15:00.
7th September 2024
As someone who watched the match said, "I was ready to go home after 20 minutes as Clevedon were playing like they didn't know each other!".
He was glad he didn't leave, as he was then treated to a festival of rugby with some great tries being scored. "That winning pint after the match was lovely", he said.
Next week, Clevedon seconds are at home to Winscombe seconds. Kick off 15:00.
7th September 2024
